he was an atheist but was cool with other people with varying beliefs. as for living, he actually had an extremely rare version of ALS that was not only early onset, but progressed much slower than the normal kind.
It's rare, but not extremely rare. It was almost early onset, but since he was in his 20s it wasn't technically early onset. In early onset ALS it's much more common to have a slow progression. But it also helped that he had constant and top-notch care, which is that "secret drug" you're referring to Dovis
