A last name was usually used for recognition: where you were from, your family lineage, or your craft were common sources, which is how we get things like Westland or Miller. However, philosophers, the ones we know well, wandered A LOT, and often were so well known that historians of the era didn't even bother with a last name, much to the detriment of the modern anthropologist or other investigators!
