*hugs* .... Now the only thing that I feel guilty about is finding a server that has a somewhat more fun SkyBlock, but I'm not giving up on donating over here because on that side of the interwebs there is too many insultans.
The one I was on, not only did it have a few other island layouts, it also had when flowing water & flowing lava meet, it randomly picks either stone (non-cobble) or an ore to be placed instead.
If there could just be a way to hook up a custom SkyBlock plugin where it would allow certain areas to be under the influence of certain effects (like what I mentioned) and others not be. That way it allows for people to purchase that island upgrade with in-game tokens or something. I'll leave that up to the ideas board. Possibly it could just be an every weekend thing with relatively low probability of an ore? That might attract more people to the SkyBlock section, although it might be OP on SkyGrid...
Tecnology babble
Well, that would work well if we had a SkyBlock plugin be able to relay what region-like coordinates are owned by who as well as a plugin to talk with it that does the flowing water meets flowing lava magic.
Only problem I see with a plugin-plugin relationship like that is for the looping through a long list to see if the resulting cobblestone should not be the default cobblestone result. Caching the recent list increases memory usage as well as needing configuration / tweaking results to know what to cache, especially if it doesn't happen often.
Not to be a pain but i really hate servers that have water and lava generate ores... first i think it's way too easy... but the worst part is that there's no way to get water and lava to just generate stone or just generate cobblestone. Some people wouldn't care but for people like me who need to mass produce stone to use for their building ideas would have to leave the server, it just wouldn't work... sorry
Feel free to comment, but if you do, make sure you have read ALL of this as well as know you can freely give constructive criticism... (I'd probably be doing this on my own setup if I had a Linux computer able to host for me (so my powerful laptop doesn't go into "hot potato mode" as quickly) as well as knowing what the plugins are that I would need (as well as if I should look on Bukkit Dev, Spigot, etc.).

Which makes generating the ores instead as an extremely rare chance on top of the ore's rarity one way to go about it, or having it happen in uncommon amounts during planned events.
It is always open to ideas and I respect your opinion. It is never possible for two people to enjoy things exactly the same way (unless one is trying to be the other like a super fanboy or something), which... is why I should have put it as a disclaimer or something at the top "my opinion" or something along those lines.
We could always see if it is possible to move the SkyBlock island if the island owner chooses to when they next log in into a world unlinked from the current SkyBlock world... the only problem exists in warps and homes set by the island owner as well as other online/offline players that exist which points to the island if it gets moved. Maybe if the idea goes through for two separate ones, have about a whole year to allow the island owner to decide and after that, if the world hasn't been moved, it stays put. Of course, the move would be 1-way and probably require a few days after the island owner accepts to make sure no real life sibling is using the account without permission.
Fair enough... being the essence of rarity I don't see how the rare ore generation would attract more players to come... it would kind of just be overlooked in my opinion. If you want to attract players to come then maybe do something like increase the amount of items you can sell in the spawn shop, or make a more interesting nether... Obviously the main reason why most players play on towny is because they like the game mode of towny, but it's also because most of the prestigiousmc community plays towny. It may not be as easy to move to move some of the community over to skyblock so somethings might have to be changed. What I'm thinking is maybe have it so players can own one island and also be able to be a part of an island. I don't know what you guys think about this but I think it might invite people to come on with their friends and actually be able to play on their friend's island and own their own island at the same time.
I agree at the island thing, but then there should be a cost (downside) as it makes SkyBlock achievements a lot easier to obtain if the one you join has a lot of stuff already... And that is not factoring in the "create island, strip it bare, store at other island" thing >.<
