RIP Attack on titan. They waited so long to make the second season that the fan base lost a lot of they're hype.
which is sad because i couldn't watch it anywhere so I resorted to watching pirated stuff on Youtube :(
It had some really good moments though. the second season just wasn't released in time thats all.

To be fair, Kemono Friends is actually pretty good. I've watched almost every SoL anime out there, and this show is definitely one of the comfiest ones. (And that's coming from someone who loathe CGI in anime)

You can tell that Japanese culture never really got over it's dislike of how firearms shattered the feudal power system to the degree that they did in all the fantasized bullet-blocking and "overpowered sword/martial art use" as I like to call it. A focus on male protagonists also shows how the culture has failed to adapt to the equality of the sexes created through modern technology, the same as how a capable character is more often described as being or having a "technique" that is "strong" or "powerful", rather than "skilled", "dangerous", or "capable".

Enough rant... Anime?

Nah, you're just overthinking things. People just think swords & martial arts are cooler. It's also not limited to japanese people, the western audience loves it too (If you've met a lot of weebs irl, you'll know how much they love those glorious nippon steel). The anime industry likes to pander to these sword/martial art otaku as a marketing strategy. After all, anime is a money making business.

There's also the fact that a lot of the most successful anime are shounen/seinen, so it's normal for most anime industry to create more anime that panders to male fans. Not because males are superior or anything, the anime industry just want to rake in as much money as possible. Male MCs are also growing more feminine these days, ya know. To make it easier for the majority of otaku to self-insert.
I'm not analyzing the international reaction, because success outside Japan for a product is largely coincidental when a product is released in Japanese and ends up having to be translated later. Certainly, there is *some* Rule of Cool going on here, but also take note of how often swords and the like show up as a primary arm in Western videos or animation; you're just as likely to see a plasma blaster or something else "period appropriate", and you don't seem to see the sword users using their swords for ridiculous things quite as often. Japan's sword obsession was once so bad that they made it so that a bayonet could be attached to nearly every long gun they produced before and during WWII, and emphasized bayonet training even though it was obvious to pretty much anyone who paid attention that the world was well into the Age of the Bullet; they relied on "warrior spirit" to win, and lost spectacularly as a result. As for "glorious Nippon steel" and the weeaboo audience, there's a reason they're called "weeaboos" alongside the likes of "wehraboos"... If they actually knew how bad a katana was compared to most European designs of the era, they probably wouldn't be so enamored. 1/2
2/2 As for the Shounen anime types, it panders to male fans that more often than ever before are finding that a female life partner is harder and harder to get due to increased female social independence and the highly domesticated role of the traditional Japanese woman that Japanese salarywomen have to break free of in order to keep their careers (for example, if a Japanese salarywoman ever gets married, she will suddenly find her career in danger: "...after all, shouldn't she just rely on her husband for goods and money? She should just go home and have children." While such thoughts aren't often said openly, the pressure on Japanese women is definitely there). Furthermore, a more "otaku-ized" male audience often has power fantasies, which are exemplified by the strong/powerful male protagonist "subduing" through some means or another a female protagonist, or more often, a harem. As for anime like Strike Witches and similar productions, those are more popular for their pantyshots, and even then have the "guns are weak" trope going on, where guns MUST be buffed somehow to be useful, and usually have similar effectiveness to a melee attack.
Long thing in a single sentence: Japan has long had a sword obsession, Japanese males often fund anime that supports their male-centric power and domination fantasies, and arts produced by a culture are an excellent tool for cultural analysis when coupled with direct social-cultural dissection.
...Guh, I have't done an in-depth analysis from cultural artifacts in YEARS... My hands hurt! xD And yes, I can do this to pretty much any culture where I can get study materials.

The visuals in this show is absolutely stunning. As expected from the art director, Osamu Masuyama, one of Studio Ghibli's background artists. He also did some background art in Kimi No Na Wa, and a few other shinkai films too.
