The Pokémon anime series would've been as popular as some long running shounen series (Naruto, One Piece, etc) if they actually adapted the pokespe manga..

There's plenty of good and fresh content for dozens of seasons, yet they chose to stick with ash ketchup and made the kid immortal for some reason

Did this manga actually go the marginally realistic route and actually show pokemon getting hurt and/or killed? If so, I'm not surprised that it wasn't added, given the target audience of that series. Of course, as a decidedly older person now, I wouldn't mind pokemon slaughter in the slightest if there was a good story to go with it.

The Arbok is fine, it has a special ability that lets it regenerate itself. Compared to most famous shounen series, this manga isn't that dark at all (It does go to a more realistic route though). It's safe enough to be read by kids and still be enjoyed by the older readers. Even Satoshi Tajiri (Pokémon creator) has endorsed the series, stating "This is the comic that most resembles the world I was trying to convey."
