It's real, it was really quite common, and it was AMAZINGLY effective. Swords get all the attention because they're all romantic and whatnot, but the bows, spears, axes, maces, hammers, and falchions did the real work. And gonnes when they came along with a bang.
A decent falchion, hammer, or axe will wreck your limbs THROUGH mail and some forms of cheap plate that could actually deflect a sword, and they don't generally need the same metal quality. And if that wasn't enough, some varieties could also be used on the farm!
